On February, 9th 2010, Da Nang Sculpture Fund offered Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture the Ganesa’s replica created by the sculptor Le Cong Dung. The original statue of Ganesa 5.2 was discovered in My Son Tower B3 and added to the museum collection since 1918.
Ganesa is represented as human body, elephant's head with long trunk, pot-belled body, in sitting or standing posture. The statue 5.2 shows Ganesa in an Indian sitting style. His left hand and right hand hold a bowl adorned with flowers and a cylindrical object, respectively. His trunk is put into the bowl. According to the mythology, the cylindrical object is likely a pen to write Mahabharata epic. The god has a long hair depicted as many braids running down. A snake – like string runs across his chest.
Ganesa is considered as the god of wisdom, luck and prosperity. Before starting a journey or a business, Hindu people give Ganesa offerings in a hope that the God brings them good fortune. Many visitors to the museum like to touch Ganesa’s trunk or belly though this habit goes against the museum regulation. The replicate of Ganesa is created to serve visitors and it can replace the original object during the preservation programs if necessary.
Commonly, a statue replica is made by casting the original. This time, Da Nang Sculpture Fund together with artists and high- skilled sculptors tested a new way by measuring, viewing and carving directly onto sandstone having the same color and formation as the original. Da Nang city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has offered the certificate of merit to Da Nang Sculpture Fund on financing and creating this replica.
