The Quang Tri collection was acquired by the museum in 1918 and 1935 and includes 14 works. Mostly found in Nam Giap, Ha Trung, Thach An and Da Nghi, they date from the 7th to 8th century.
1. Polo Players.
Date: 7th - 8th century Material: Sandstone ID No: [24.4] Location: Thach An
This relief group known as "the polo players"may have adorned the outer face of a string - wall. It shows two horsemen brandishing polo sticks with long handles. The horses reflect the influences of India, in common with Java and China, but are refashioned in an original Cham style. The horsemen have the same headdress and hair style as the fingures on the Tra Kieu pedestal.
Polo was first played in the Persian Empire, the present day Iran and history records that the ancient Persians played it 2500 years ago. The game spread through the steppes of central Asia to other countries including China, Tibet, India and Japan. It was not popular in Champa and some scholars believe the sculpture reflects a foreign influence on Champa art at that time.
2. Pedestal.
Date: 7th - 8th century Material: Sandstone ID No: [22.3] Location: Ha Trung
This large pedestal fragment shows lions alternating with elephants. Each animal has a different posture, which makes the whole scene look very lively and amusing. The sculpture was found in Ha Trung, Quang Tri Province and donated to the Museum in 1918.
3. Pilaster.
Date: 7th - 8th century Material: Sandstone ID No: [26.6] Location: Ha Trung
The pilaster is divided vertically with central circular mouldings and fully decorated with a foliage motif.
